FAQ’s

Frequently asked Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning questions:

  • Does having my carpets cleaned make them get dirty quicker?
No. We at Gerrards use high performance carpet and upholstery cleaning systems which develop up to 20 times more power than portable electric machines and have the knowledge and experience to make sure re-soiling is not a problem. Our powerful systems clean right down to the bottom of the carpet pile, leaving nothing behind to spring back to the top and look dirty again.
  • Should I wait as long as possible before having my carpet cleaned?
No. Dirt and soils are abrasive – like sandpaper. Every time you walk on your carpet, you grind dirt into it. This can cut the carpet fibres and cause your carpet to wear out faster.
  • How often should I have my carpets, rugs and upholstery cleaned?
Most carpet and furniture manufacturers recommend that carpets are professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. Leaving long periods between professional cleaning appointments will result in the build up of significant soiling and grit that acts as an abrasive, reducing the lifespan of your furnishings.

  • Is the only reason to clean carpets and upholstery to remove the dirt?
No. Outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes and hundreds of other chemicals, which are brought in on your hair, skin, clothing and shoes. Not surprisingly, these can end up in your carpet and furniture.
  • Are all cleaning methods the same?
No. We feel that there is only one method that gives you a truly deep down clean and that is the Hot Water Extraction method.  Our machines can develop up to 20 times more power than portable electric machines and can heat cleaning solutions to temperatures in excess of 200 degrees Fahrenheit thereby killing germs and bacteria lodged deep within the carpet and upholstery pile. Hot Water Extraction cleaning is often referred to as steam cleaning.
  • Will my carpets be left wet after cleaning?
Your carpets will be left touch dry as we leave and will be completely dry within 2 to 3 hours. We often use fans, where possible, to assist the drying process.

Your local carpet & upholstery cleaning specialists

  • Will all the stains come out of my carpets and upholstery?
Although we cannot guarantee that all stains will be removed, our training, experience, and the quality of our equipment gives us the best possible chance of removing any particularly stubborn stains. There are some stains that prove irreversible (particularly if you have attempted to treat them yourself with a shop bought stain remover!), but we will advise where this may prove to be the case.
  • Do I have to move my furniture?
Our service does include moving certain items of furniture such as suites and dining tables when required to do so – and replacing carefully. The only thing we ask of you, is that you place any valuable and delicate items / ornaments out of the cleaning area if necessary. There may also be some very heavy items that are not practical to move, but this can be discussed prior to commencement of the work. Electrical equipment due to its fragility cannot be moved by our technicians.
  • Do you do offer stain protection?
Yes, we provide stain protection to all types of carpets and upholstery.

  • Are you insured?
Yes we have both employers and public liability insurance cover.
  • Can pet odours and urine be removed?
The deodoriser in our cleaning solution will deal with most pet odours. For problem areas we would need to apply a special urine treatment. Please discuss this with us when you call our office.
